Timeout on bind

I get an ALT.SMS.CommandStatus.SMPPCLIENT_RCVTIMEOUT status when trying to bind after connecting ok. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this?
It works ok using some other components so it's not the smpp server or settings that are causing a problem.
